PENNAS D’AMOR

Fados for Piano

Nuno Marques

In Pennas D’Amor, pianist Nuno Marques offers a rare and illuminating journey through Portugal’s musical soul. This recording unveils Alexandre Rey Colaço’s complete Nine Fados for Piano and Eduardo Burnay’s Fado Burnay—two long-overlooked gems that bridge fado’s vocal origins with refined pianistic art. The piano works are presented alongside poems published with Colaço’s scores, restoring the dialogue between verse and music. With sensitivity and personal depth, Marques captures the poetry, melancholy, and saudade of these works, reviving their expressive beauty for modern audiences and reaffirming fado as a living tradition both in café and concert hall.

REVIEW

'Between the poetry and Colaço’s music, Fado as you think you know it becomes something quite different. There are few recordings of Colaço’s Fado cycle, and this is a welcome addition to the Fado world. By making the poetry and the music live together, the genre takes on a new life. Instead of being a passive observer of a staged café show, you can read and understand the meaning(s) in the poetry and hear that in the music. A long-awaited performance of both words and music.'
