Piano Works No. 8: Piano Songs, Vol. 1 & 2
Nicolas Horvath
World Premiere Recording
This collection presents the most melodic and meditative piano works from 40 years of Denis Levaillant’s career, spanning 1978 to 2018. Featuring mostly pieces originally created for shows, films, and broadcasts, it showcases deeply melodic and emotionally resonant “piano songs” inspired by childhood and intimacy. Unlike the composer’s more complex and virtuosic works, these selections offer a harmonious, stylistically unified journey through his French-influenced musical world. Beautifully interpreted by acclaimed pianist Nicolas Horvath, a friend of the composer, the album invites listeners into a wide-ranging, heartfelt musical universe, including acclaimed pieces from theatre, ballet, and the Palme d’Or-winning film La Vie d’Adèle (Blue is the warmest colour).

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

NICOLAS HORVATH is a groundbreaking pianist known for his innovative approach to classical and contemporary music. His repertoire spans from classical masterpieces to contemporary works and he frequently collaborates with artists from various genres and disciplines, creating unique performance experiences.
A champion of Philip Glass’s works, he has performed complete cycles of Glass’s complete compositions as well as those of Erik Satie, in non-stop, overnight concerts. Horvath’s passion for rediscovering unjustly forgotten works, particularly those by female French composers such. as Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy and Hélène de Montgeroult (both 18th Century) and Germaine Tailleferre (20th C), has garnered widespread critical acclaim. He is also an avid promoter of music from our own time and has collaborated with leading contemporary composers from around the world, such as Terry Riley, Alvin Lucier, Denis Levaillant, Danny Elfman, Mamoru Fujieda, Jaan Rääts, Alvin Curran and Valentyn Silvestrov. He has commissioned and premiered a vast repertoire from a large number of composers (notably in 2014 from more than 120 composers for his Homages to Philip Glass project). Read more
THE COMPOSER

French composer and pianist DENIS LEVAILLANT (b. 1952) is one of today’s major musical talents. Since 1973 he has developed a distinct, highly varied oeuvre (including opera, ballet, symphonies, chamber music, choral, instrumental, electro-acoustic, and more), allying the rhythmic energy of jazz and popular music to a new orchestral colour in the French tradition, appealing to all audiences.
He approached music by studying classical piano, demonstrating precocious gifts. At the same time, he distinguished himself in general studies at the prestigious Lycée Louis-le-Grand and the Sorbonne in Paris, where he earned a Master’s Degree in philosophy in 1974. In 1973, he wrote his first radio work, Circus Virus, for the Atelier de Création de France Culture; the beginning of a long collaboration with radio, which would lead to his winning the RAI Prize at the Italia Prize in 1988.
